Place: the Atlanta behind the story

Thomas writes from Atlanta, a city he says feeds the energy of his fiction. In his submitted premise, the Benton family’s story begins with poverty and reaches toward greater power. The streets are not merely scenery. They help explain what the characters want to escape, what they hope to gain, and why their decisions come with consequences.

Choice: what is success worth?

A family’s rise can test the very loyalties that first brought it together. As the Bentons build influence, ambition and trust no longer point automatically in the same direction. Thomas’s submitted description frames those pressures as central to the saga. Who can be counted on when the stakes change? And can the promise of a better life survive the compromises made to reach it?

Echo: the things a family carries

The appeal of a family-centered crime story often lies in what happens between the larger events: the small doubts, the unspoken expectations, and the question of whether a decision taken for one person’s benefit may wound another. Hear No Evil gives Story Coordinates a chance to consider those tensions through the world of contemporary urban fiction.

  1. To me, loyalty reveals its true character when circumstances change. It’s easy to stand beside someone when there’s little to gain or lose. But success has a way of exposing what was always beneath the surface.

I’ve come to realize that not everyone who celebrates your beginning will be comfortable with your growth. Sometimes success changes people. Other times, it simply reveals who they were all along.

Loyalty doesn’t mean agreeing with everything someone does, nor does it require sacrificing your dignity to prove your commitment. It means remaining genuine when circumstances shift, speaking the truth even when it’s uncomfortable, and remembering the people who stood beside you before there was anything to gain.

Perhaps the real question isn’t whether success changes loyalty, but whether that loyalty was ever rooted in love and respect or merely in convenience.

Because success doesn’t always change the people around us. Sometimes, it changes how clearly we see them.
